The first crash reported around 9:30 a.m. was a chain reaction type which started on the northbound side of I-87 and continued as one of the vehicles struck a jersey barrier and pushed it into the left lane of southbound traffic causing additional crashes, according to state police. A motor-vehicle crash that initially blocked the left lane caused stop-and-go delays of nearly a half hour early Friday evening on northbound I-87 in Rockland. The crash, reported just before 6:30 p.m., occurred between Exit 12 (Route 303) in West Nyack and Exit 13 (Palisades Parkway), with the gridlock stretching back to Exit 10 (Route 9W) in Nyack.
