BEYOND BERGEN: A 57-year-old man needed 80 stitches to close his wounds after a homeless man attacked him with a broken bottle across the street from the Port Authority 42nd Street bus terminal in midtown Manhattan yesterday, police said.
Two Port Authority officers flagged down by witnesses grabbed the alleged assailant at 41st and Eighth, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said this morning.
The victim told them that 47-year-old Candido Jerez grabbed a bottle, broke it on the ground and attacked him with it when he didn’t give him a cigarette.
He was cut on the head, chest and hand, Pentangelo said.
Jerez was charged with assault and illegal weapons possession, he said, noting that the incident didn’t occur on authority property.
