“We make the trip up from Fair Lawn pretty regularly,” Susan Devine told Daily Voice. “I like a pizza that’s well-one, which is how they make it. It’s always crispy.”

“They make the perfect thin-crust pie,” added her dining companion, James Romaglio. “The toppings are also done well. It’s just the perfect pie.”

Family-owned Kinchley’s Tavern on North Franklin Turnpike was selected as a top finalist in Daily Voice's DVlicious Best Pizza in Bergen competition.

The restaurant was founded in 1937 by the Kinchley family and purchased by the Margolis family in 1986.

“We are a family-oriented Italian American restaurant that’s kid friendly,” said George Margolis, who co-owns the business with his mother, Abby, and handles day-to-day operations.

Kinchley’s famous bar pie has won competitions on radio stations WPLJ, NASH FM and 77WABC, as well as with Zagat, The Record, New Jersey Monthly and the Herald News. The pie has remained unchanged since 1947, Margoils told Daily Voice.

A Clydesdale hanging above the entrance has been there since 2008, as a tribute to his father, Jerry, who intended to recreate the logo — Clydesdales pulling a draft cart — over the entrance of a new, expanded location that never materialized.

“Dad had the horse made as a prototype, and the winter after he passed away, I decided to hang it up in tribute to him,” he said.

The restaurant gets especially crowded on fall and winter weekends with Don Bosco fans, who pack the place after games on Friday nights and Saturdays.

“We get a lot of people who come here as a family tradition,” said Michael, a manager who declined to give his last name. “They came with their parents and grandparents, and now they bring their kids here.”
