WESTWOOD, N.J. -- Brianna Commerford, a senior at Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School, was honored with two awards for her community service efforts, including one issued on behalf of President Barack Obama.

Commerford received a Certificate of Excellence from the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program and with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Commerford, a childhood cancer survivor, served as the Hyundai Hope on Wheels National Youth Ambassador from 2010 to 2012 and continues her association with them, traveling to pediatric cancer centers across the country sharing her own story and message of hope.

The organization helped raise more than $73 million dollars for children with cancer.

The Westwood senior also lobbied on the Congress floor alongside Congressmen Trent Kelly and Michael McCaul for the passage of the Creating Hope Act, which revolutionized the way kids with cancer are treated, two years ago.

Commerford has also been a Relay for Life team captain for the past six years, raising $35,000.

She is also a spokesperson for Pennies for Patients, the Valerie Fund, and Hero for Hope as well as an advocate and public speaker for the October Woman’s Foundation and Columbia University Medical Center for the Hope and Heroes Children’s Cancer Fund.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honors middle and high school students across America for outstanding volunteer service. Certificates of Excellence are granted to the top 10 percent of all applicants in each state and the District of Columbia.

“Prudential is honored to celebrate the contributions of these remarkable young volunteers,” Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld said in a statement. “By shining a spotlight on the difference they’ve made in their communities, we hope others are inspired to volunteer, too.”

The President’s Volunteer Service Awards thank and honor Americans of all ages who volunteer significant amounts of time to serve their communities and their country and, by example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.
