WESTWOOD, N.J. -- Westwood students in Henry Chen’s Physics class had a shocking experience when they linked their hands to a Van de Graaf generator.
The mysterious machine collects a large number of negatively charged particles on its dome. When the students put their hand on the dome, the negatively charged particles start collecting on the students as well.
This sometimes results in a hair-raising experience. When the students are linked, they are one big chain of negatively charged particles waiting to surge to the ground or the nearest conductor.
