"For those wanting a small-town feel while still enjoying the perks of a big city, North Arlington delivers," the report says.

"Located less than 15 miles from New York City’s financial district, this spot gives commuters an ideal home base, with excellent schools and low crime."

Coming in at the top of the list is Fishers, Ind., listed as a booming city with good schools, low cost of living, and an entrepreneurial buzz.

"Drive too quickly and you just might miss Saddle Brook, a suburban community in Bergen County," the report says.

"Less than three square miles, the tiny hamlet offers easy access to Manhattan, but has a distinctly small-town feel:

"Saddle Brook’s location, eight miles west of New York City, is a key advantage—average commute time is just 23 minutes. The town also boasts low crime and gets high marks for education, with a 92% high school graduation rate."

  • Clifton also made the list at number 36:

"You might recognize Clifton from its on-screen appearances — maybe you’ve caught it in The Sopranos, or seen it in the Johnny Depp film Donnie Brasco," Money Magazine says.

"The town has more recently been in headlines as home to the nation’s best hot dog. But beyond the pop culture tie-ins, Clifton also offers a winning mix of affordability and access.

"With New York City roughly 20 miles away, Clifton boasts relatively modest home sale prices—median sale price was just $293,000 in the county— along with proximity to the city’s resources. Average commute time for residents is 24 minutes, and the town also has modest crime rates."
