NEW MILFORD, N.J. — New Milford Councilwoman Kelly Langschultz announced Wednesday she is running for Senate in New Jersey’s 38th legislative district, according to an announcement by the Senate Republican Majority.

“I am running because I want to bring the common sense of a mother and successful small business owner from Bergen County to the Statehouse in Trenton,” said Kelly, a 36-year-old mother of four.

She started her business — Precision Billing & Consulting Services — when she was 22 and created her first job when she was 25.

Currently, Langschultz employs 25 to 40 people at any given time

“I know firsthand how hard it is to make ends meet in this tough economy,” she said, “especially with the state of New Jersey dipping their hands into our wallets at every turn.”

District 38 is known to be one of the state’s most competitive, with Republicans coming within 2,000 votes of winning the seat in the last election cycle.

The seat is currently held by Sen. Robert M. Gordon, a Democrat and 13-year incumbent.

The Senate Republican Majority announcement referenced Gordon’s legislative record as “checkered.”

“Sen. Bob Gordon has raised taxes on everything from our pets to his latest vote to increase the gas tax by 23 cents per gallon,” Langschultz said.

She added that her neighbors, friends and friends’ grandparents are being forced out of their home state by rising taxes because Trenton politicians have not spent within their means.

“Middle-class families and seniors need relief,” Kelly said.

Langschultz holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Rutgers University.

She won a seat on the New Milford Borough Council last year.

Kelly and her family of six, with four children, have been New Milford residents since 2005.
