WAYNE, N.J. -- A jalopy with its high beams on in heavy traffic led Wayne police to 41 bags of heroin and eight used syringes, authorities said Thursday.

Officers Michael Polifrone and Mark Ciavirella were conducting safety and security patrols along southbound Route 23 when they spotted the 2003 vehicle, whose driver stopped at the TGI Fridays at Wayne Towne Center.

The driver -- 39-year-old Jerry Caiazzo of Montclair -- didn't have a valid license, Capt. Lawrence Martin said.

While talking with him, the officers also noticed a used heroin bag in plain view, the captain said.

A search turned up the full bags and used syringes, as well as two broken spoons, he said.

Caiazzo was released on a court summonses charging him with possession of the drug, the syringes and the paraphernalia, Martin said.

He also received several traffic summonses:

  • Maintenance of lamps;
  • Following too closely;
  • Windshield obstruction;
  • Failing to have a valid driver's license;
  • Failure to inspect;
  • Possession of drugs in a motor vehicle.
