YOU READ IT HERE FIRST : A Hillsdale resident proved that vigilance helps after calling police on a hunch and leading them to a stranger who turned out to be a fugitive from Virginia.

The woman called police Saturday afternoon to report two  men going door-to-door selling cleaning products in her neighborhood, Police Chief Chip Stalter said.

“She thought that the men were suspicious, and she believed that they did not have the requisite permit to conduct such business in town,” the chief said.

Officer Chris Donaldson spotted the men at work, stopped them and ran background checks, Stalter said. One of them was clean, the chief said, but the second was listed in a national fugitive data base as Jamel Arrington, 34, currently of Newark and formerly of Virginia, where he was wanted.

Officer from Henrico County had been looking for Arrington since March, when he was released from prison after serving time for a gun conviction, Stalter said.

Arrington is being held at the Bergen County Jail pending extradition to Virginia. “Arrington’s associate
was warned for soliciting without a permit and released,” Stalter added.

This marks the third time, he said, that Hillsdale police have plucked a fugitive from town streets following “routine encounters.”

He urged residents to keep it up. There‘s no underestimating “the importance of vigilance and cooperation between police and concerned residents,” the chief said.
