Waldwick PD Arrests Driver, 18, In Videotaped Route 17 Hit-Run Crash

WALDWICK, N.J. -- An 18-year-old student at Lincoln Tech in Mahwah was the reckless hit-and-run driver caught on dashboard video who sent an SUV bouncing off the median on northbound Route 17 in Waldwick before speeding off, authorities told Daily Voice on Friday.

Franmer Ferreras-Diaz, 18, of Paterson was issued several traffic summonses while an investigation continues, Waldwick Detective Sergeant Troy E. Seifert said.

A Mahwah police sergeant spotted the car outside the school on McKee Drive behind the TD Bank, State Line Diner and other businesses on the highway and notified his colleagues, Seifert said.

"We interviewed [Ferreras-Diaz] and he admitted he was the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident," the sergeant said.

The crash was captured by a tractor-trailer driver's dashboard camera just before 7 a.m. Tuesday. The rear license plate wasn't visible, however, and police shared it with the public on Daily Voice.

Two Englewood residents who were in the SUV on their way to work in Ramsey -- one 64, the other 62 -- told police that they didn't require immediate medical attention after their vehicle hit the median twice, Sgt. Robert J. Woessner told Daily Voice.

The investigation was continuing, authorities said Friday.
