Although no drugs were found, a pair of drug-sniffing dogs — one from the Port Authority and the other from Customs and Border Protection — gave positive indications to their handlers.

“Who knows what prompted the response?” the source said. “For all we know, it could have been connected to someone who leased the plane before them.”

Thirteen people, including the crew, were aboard the Gulfstream IV (photo, above, courtesy CBS) when it arrived from Toronto just before 3 p.m. in advance of Sunday’s Super Bowl and pre-game events, a second source said.

“Whoever had access to the plane when it came in notified the Port Authority that there was a strong odor of marijuana on board,” he said.

The Canadian group reportedly included Bieber’s father, for whom the Grammy winner told reporters earlier this week that he was chartering the jet.

All were detained and interviewed during the search, the second source said.

The incident comes two days after Toronto authorities brought assault charges against the 19-year-old pop star. He already is facing a DUI in Miami and remains under investigation for felony vandalism in California.
