ONLY ON CVP: A Rockland County man who stole a van that left donuts spilled all over the Montvale rest stop on the Garden State Parkway was sentenced to four years in prison Friday.
Charles Hill, 48, said he has a serious alcohol addiction that he’s trying to overcome.
“I have a 9-year old daughter, your honor. I take care of my family,” Hill told Superior Court Judge Patrick J. Roma. “My parents are elderly, and I’m trying to be home for my daughter’s teenage years.
“I’m not saying what I did wasn’t wrong. I’ve done a lot of wrong things,” he said. “But I’ve never hurt anyone, never done anything violent. I’m asking for a chance … to be there for my daughter.”
At the same time, Hill told the judge: “I admit I did it, and I’ll serve my time like a man.”
Roma, in turn, reduced Hill’s plea-bargained sentence to four years from five.
Hill, of Spring Valley, was in a cab that he said “dumped” him at the rest stop in January 2012. He asked a driver standing outside an International Harvester van for a ride but was turned down.
So he took the van.
What Hill didn’t know was that the vehicle was loaded with Dunkin’ Donuts, which spilled all over the rest stop before police arrived and arrested him.
