The victim sustained a serious head injury, among others, Police Chief Frank Regino said.

"He just got off the train and was trying to cross Third Avenue at Park Avenue [in front of Flynn's Deli] when he was hit" just after 6:30 p.m., Regino said. "The driver apparently didn't see him."

Police reserves assisted with traffic as the Hillsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps took the victim to Hackensack University Medical Center.

The driver, meanwhile, was taken to HUMC at Pascack Valley in Westwood apparently suffering from shock.

Police impounded the four-door sedan.

The Bergen County Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification was collecting evidence for the county prosecutor's Fatal Accident Investigation unit, which was reviewing the circumstances with Westwood police.
