ALPINE, N.J. -- The driver of an SUV that crashed deep into the woods overnight Wednesday on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Alpine -- remaining hidden until daybreak -- apparently fell asleep at the wheel, authorities said.

Although a Bergen County medical examiner will officially determine the cause and manner of death, police said Peter Kim, 55,  of West Nyack nodded out, PIP Police Chief Michael Coppola said.

Kim's silver Toyota went airborne and landed "deep in the woods" off the northbound parkway just past the Alpine Lookout and struck several trees before coming to rest on the other side of a small hill sometime overnight,

It was found heavily damaged around 7 a.m., once "daylight was able to make the scene visible," he said.

EMS and firefighters who responded found the driver dead, Coppola said..
