Amid retirements, layoffs and other cuts statewide comes news that Lodi’s traffic division has been disbanded and the detective bureau reduced by two.
It’s no different in most other towns. Across the state, police chiefs and high-ranking officers are putting in their papers, as Gov. Chris Christie keeps his pledge to reduce the number of those who serve and protect the public.
Lodi’s department, which has topped out at around 45 officers, now is at 39, says Chief Vincent Caruso.
He says they’ll make due because they have to, but he’s not expecting the best of times.
“It’s going to get progressively worse and worse and worse,” he told The Bergen Record.
At the same time, he said he’s grateful that no officers were laid off. But that could still happen once a state-mandated 2-percent cap on local property tax hikes takes effect in January.
