Eric Fernandez “stole the checks while transporting the resident,” then filled them out and signed them in the victim’s name, Police Chief Robert Francaviglia said.

The 32-year-old EMT then deposited the checks into the account of Karian Persaud, 31, who works as a clerk, the chief said.

Fernandez was arrested Wednesday, charged with various forgery and theft counts and sent to the Bergen County Jail.

Hours later, a judge ordered him released pending further court action, under New Jersey's 2017 bail reform law..

Persaud was released on a summons.
