Hillsdale homeowner confronts burglar

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Hillsdale homeowner hearing a noise upstairs last night confronted a burglar who fled, police confirmed this morning.

The Wierimus Road resident called police at 7:20 p.m. and they flooded the area. Westwood police said they pulled over a white van fitting the description of the getaway vehicle, but it wasn’t Hillsdale’s suspect.

The homeowner told Sgt. Chris Donaldson and Officers Alex Kaplan, Ryan Norton and Mike Camporeale that he heard a noise and checked to find the burglar.

He described him as Hispanic, stocky and from 25 to 30 years old, Officer William Diedtrich told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Detective Adam Hampton and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation collected evidence – which a police source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT included a metal tool possibly used to break in.

Hillsdale police said the burglar came in through the front door and went straight to the master bedroom. He was finished ransacking it when the homeowner confronted him and he bolted, Diedtrich said.

“The investigation remains on going to determine the proceeds from the crime, as well as any evidence recovered during the processing of the crime scene,” he said.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Hillsdale PD: (201) 664-4200
