Steven A. Aquino, 28, sold the pills for $7,000 in cash that the detectives said they found stashed in a pair of gloves used during the June 16 holdup at J&J Pharmacy on State Street.

Aquino was wearing all black clothing, a cloth over his face, when he demanded all the Oxy pills from a store employee while wielding either a knife or a pair of scissors, Capt. Patrick Coffey said.

He fled the store carrying a white plastic bag full of pills and got into a smallish white SUV, the captain said.

City detectives working the case located a white Hyundai Sante Fe that they then linked to Aquino, Coffey said.

A warranted search of his home turned up the cash-filled gloves, he said.

Arrested this past weekend, Aquino was charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and related weapons offenses.

A judge ordered after a detention hearing in Hackensack that Aquino remain held in the Bergen County Jail pending the outcome of the case.

"This incident is another example of the various issues the opioid epidemic is causing throughout the nation," Coffey said. "It is also another example of the dedication and resolve the members of the Hackensack Police Department display to keep their community safe."

Coffey also thanked Bogota and Teaneck police for their roles in the investigation.
