120 extra state troopers on New Jersey roads for St. Patrick’s weekend

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: N.J. State Police have extra troopers roaming this St. Patrick’s weekend — 120 more, in fact — looking for drunks and drivers using handheld devices, not wearing seatbelts or ignoring the “Move Over” law.

The Move Over Law requires drivers to leave an empty lane when passing a stopped police car, ambulance, fire truck or other emergency vehicle. Those who can’t move over must slow down and be prepared to stop.

“As we enter this year’s celebration, drivers must do their part to reduce fatal accidents by using a designated driver and driving responsibly,” State Police Superintendent Col Rick Fuentes said.

It’s relatively early, but 114 people died on New Jersey’s roadways as of early today, a slight uptick from the 109 during the same period last year.

One person died on a New Jersey road during last year’s St. Patrick’s weekend. NJSP are hoping that this year brings none.
