River Vale Man In US On Work Visa Pleads Not Guilty To Stealing Flag

The 20-year-old man living in Bergen County accused of stealing an American flag from a Rockland County restaurant has pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct amid a report he is in the country on a work visa.

Surveillance footage was recovered showing a suspect, identified by Orangetown police as Brandon Gartrell of River Vale, stealing a giant flag hanging from outside the Brew House in Pearl River on July 22. He was back in court on Tuesday to answer to a petit larceny charge, which was reduced by the judge to a count of disorderly conduct.

According to a News12 report, Gartrell is on a work visa from South Afric and admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the incident. After pleading not guilty, he is due back in Orangetown Court on Tuesday, Aug. 15.
