"We have had a lot of issues with people knocking on other people's doors, and it was getting out of hand," Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali told Daily Voice. "We want to protect our residents from sellers and real estate agents who don't want to follow the rules."

The measure, recently approved by the mayor and council, also prohibits "canvassers, distributors, solicitors, peddlers, transient merchants or hawkers" to knock on their door without a permit.

Residents who want to join the list can register their address with the municipal clerk.

They'll get a sticker that goes on their front door.

Violators will be fined.
