MONTVALE, N.J. -- Northern New Jersey nonprofit Oasis recently honored KPMG for its for 20 years of service to the organization.

Oasis "is on a mission to change the lives of women and children in need by helping them to break the cycle of poverty through programs that feed, clothe, educate and empower," a news release noted. "And KPMG has walked that journey with them from the beginning."

KPMG was the first-ever corporate honoree in Oasis' two-decade history. Its Chairman and CEO Lynne Doughtie accepted the tribute at Oasis' annual "Gala for Hope."

"Our relationship with Oasis is translated in two major ways," Doughtie said. "First, we inspire hope. We're working together so that the women and children we serve can look ahead with expectation rather than anxiety or fear.

"But hope alone can't fill an empty stomach, or give someone the skills they need to find a good job. Hope alone can't put a clean diaper on a child. Which is why KPMG's volunteers work with Oasis to look into the eyes of those in need, spend time listening to their concerns, and respond with compassion and substance."

For 20 years, employees from KPMG's Montvale, Short Hills and New York offices have helped Oasis assist the more than 600 women and children who walk through its doors each day. Tom Duffy, KPMG International's COO-Global Audit, and his wife Debbie serve on Oasis' board, as treasurer and president, respectively.

KPMG volunteers -- nearly 150 last year -- assisted through food, clothing and diaper donations; childcare and literacy assistance; workplace skills help; and financial contributions.

In 1997, KPMG's U.S. firm celebrated its 100th birthday with an event known as "World of Spirit Day." Each U.S. office closed, and the firm's employees were invited to volunteer in local communities. One target of KPMG's assistance that day was Oasis, then in its first year of operation.

From the beginning, each knew it had found something special in the other. "Twenty years is a long time together," Doughtie said. "And with so much more to do, we're proud to continue the journey with you."
