WESTWOOD, N.J. -- Police are warning residents that a coyote has been spotted wandering between Westvale Park and Pascack Brook County Park in Westwood.
Although coyote attacks are uncommon, the small wild dogs seem to be losing their fear of humans – especially in urban areas -- and have been known to chase bicyclists or joggers or to confront people walking their dogs, according to Wikipedia.
If approached by a coyote, experts advise looking at it while backing slowly away, making yourself as large and imposing as possible, making loud noises, and throwing rocks or sticks at the animal, according to wikiHow.
Westwood police are advising residents to keep a watchful eye on small children and pets and to notify them of any further sightings.
Pascack Brook Park is off Emerson Road; Westvale Park is on Sand Road.
