HILLSDALE, N.J. -- Boy Scout Ryan Tobin of Troop 109 in Hillsdale beamed with pride as he formally turned over his completed Eagle Scout project -- landscaping around memorial plaques for five local soldiers killed in Vietnam -- to American Legion Post 162.
The project which was conceived in the fall of 2015, was to provide landscaping around the memorial plaques for the so-called Hillsdale Five -- Ernie Elfenbein, Edward Maher, Peter Murner, Michael Roelle and George Poor.
The plaques are located at five ball fields in town that were re-named last year in honor of the young men, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in 1967 and 1968.
Ryan, who attends St. Joseph Regional High School, raised the money for materials and personally landscaped each of the locations.
His project "completes the effort that was made by so many to finally bring recognition to the Hillsdale Five," Legion Commander Phil Langner said.
