21 Bergen Veterans Honored At The Bristal In Woodcliff Lake

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J.– An assisted and independent living community in Woodcliff Lake that offers memory care support celebrated Veterans Day on Wednesday by honoring a group of 21 of its residents who served in the military.

The youngest is 77 and the oldest 94.

Among those attending the event at The Bristal Assisted Living were Mayor-Elect Carlos Rendo, state Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi and Dean Brown, the center's director of business development.

The veterans honored:

William Vincent Maloney, Sr. , 96, served in the U.S. Army for three and a half years. He is a former resident of Allendale.

Martin Nunberg , 93, served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is a former resident of Florida.

Alfred Riccardo , 87, served in the U.S. Air Force after World War II before the Korean War. He served two years and never saw combat. He is a former resident of Madison.

Clarence (Tom) Thompson , 87, served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for two years between 1951 and 1953. He served with the National Security Agency on active duty as a communications technician. He is a former resident of Riverdale.

Irving Seidenberg, 92, served in the U.S. Army’s Signal Corps for three years between 1943 and 1945. He is a former resident of Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.

Sydney P. Hackell , 89, served in the U.S. Army for two years between 1944 and 1946. He was part of an engineering section that was stationed in Manhattan. He is a former resident of Long Beach, N.Y.

John Rothschild , 84, served in the U.S. Submarine Service of the Army and fought in the Korean War. He served for four years, between 1950 and 1954. He was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1937. He is a former resident of Montvale.

Lawrence Clayton Bibb , 90, served in the U.S. Navy for three years between 1943 and 1946. He worked as a pharmacist’s mate in the South Pacific. He is a former resident of Verona.

Donald Sullivan , 88, served in U.S. Navy during World War II between 1945 and 1948. He served on tanker USS Tomahawk, the first ship in Tokyo Harbor where the surrender was signed. He is a former resident of Bronx, N.Y.

Dominic Garamone , 84, served in the U.S. Army (Private First Class) during the Korean War for two years, between 1952 and 1954. He was stationed in Oklahoma and worked in communications. He is a former resident of Montvale

Mortimer Mendoza , 86, served in the U.S. Army (Corporal) during the Korean War and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. He is a former resident of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Anthony Corbo , 89, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II for two years, between 1944 and 1946. He is a former resident of Saddle Brook.

Ralph Lilore , 94, served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during World War II for four years, between 1942 and 1946. When he first entered the Army, he was assigned to a newly activated 100th Infantry Division. One of his brothers also served in the U.S. Army and was Dwight D. Eisenhower’s personal guard. He is a former resident of Rutherford.

Uriel Goldsmith , 79, served in the U.S. Army as 1st Lieutenant USAR, and then was in the Reserves. During his service, he was a Platoon Leader and served at the company headquarters. During the Korean War, he worked in 477th Chemical Battalion.

Michael Marone , 85, served in the U.S. Army for three months in 1951. He was discharged due to medical reasons. He is a former resident of Upper Saddle River.

Joseph Dispoto , 91, served in the U.S. Army during World War II for three years during, between 1943 and 1946. He is a former resident of Garfield.

Bernard Turner , 86, served in the U.S. Army as a national guard during the 1950s. He is a former resident of Cresskill.

Saul Gandle , 91, served in the U.S. Army for three years. He is a former resident of Franklin Lakes.

Eugene Kosmin , 87, served in the U.S. Army in Fort Benning, Georgia. He is a former resident of Margate City.

Peter DeCarlo , 77, served in the U.S. Naval Air Forces. He was a first class airman who worked in radar and communications. He is a former resident of Hillsdale.

James Hayes , 89, served in the U.S. Navy as a Second Class Radarman between 1946 and 1950 during World War II. He led a convoy of 60 freighters in France during his service on the DD-395 USS Davis Destroyer Ship. He is a former resident of Closter.
