More than a dozen officers grew full beards and mustaches as part of the department’s and the Hillsdale PBA’s No-Shave November Campaign to raise funds for Mayday Missions, a Westwood-based non-profit that assists families of law enforcement, EMS and firefighters in need.

“We are donating $2,090 to Mayday Missions,” a bearded Officer Ryan Norton said, as he stood in the Shave Bar in downtown Hillsdale, waiting for his turn for a shave.

The organization is currently supporting Joey Bulger of Westwood who is fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The boy is the son of River Vale Police Sgt. Chris Bulger and his wife Lauren, a social worker.

Norton said last year the PBA raised money for No-Shave.org, and “this year we decided to bring it closer to home.”

Hillsdale Police Capt. Sean Smith said that the officers aren’t able to keep facial hair all year long. But “we step outside our rules and regulations for a good cause.”

Evan Vidal, owner of the Shave Bar, was happy he and his staff could give back.

“We like to support a good cause, especially one that has to do with our local police department,” he said.
