Her new novel centers on a crafty therapy dog, a Yorkshire terrier named Prozac, who has a canine Mensa-level IQ and possesses unique insights into the human condition. Through a comedy of errors, Prozac enlists the help of "folks in Act III of their lives" at an independent living facility where he visits once a week, to rescue a young woman suffering from protracted grief.

"The Thing Is" focuses on the nature of loss, the need for human connection and the resilience of the human spirit.

One review on Amazon raves,

Great story! Unexpected, delightful, uniquely creative. ... Kathleen Gerard not only understands the canine brain, but she gets people too. 'The Thing Is' reminds us of how intricate and interwoven relationships are -- and Prozac teaches us about grace and unconditional love.

Gerard's presentation will delve into her inspiration for "The Thing Is" -- the story behind the story -- and how she crafted it.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase, and refreshments will be served. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m.
