MONTVALE, N.J. — What sets doctor Michael Fiorillo apart from many other surgeons is that most of his patients elect to go under the knife.
That doesn’t make it any easier for the double-board certified cosmetic surgeon to operate on his clients.
“The day I’m not nervous going into work is the day I’ll retire,” said Fiorillo, of Saddle River, who’s operated out of Montvale and Pearl River, N.Y. since 1998. “Whenever you’re taking a knife to somebody’s body… it’s a privilege to be able to do that, but you still get nervous."
Fiorillo intended to become a pediatrician up until he experienced surgery in medical school. Now, the cosmetic surgeon, father and author uses his passion and skill to help people feel better about themselves.
“There’s a lot to be said for self-esteem,” said Fiorillo, whose most rewarding procedures are on people who recently lost a lot of weight but need surgical help removing excess skin.
The doctor is not one to stop learning. He traveled to Sweden in January 2013 to train with Dr. Charles Randquist, an internationally recognized breast augmentation surgeon to learn how to properly insert a revolutionary, tear drop-shaped breast implant.
Fiorilli was among the first surgeons to offer the revolutionary product in the United States.
It’s not uncommon for people to request his help for a quick boost in confidence, Fiorillo said, like a mother who once asked for liposuction on her daughter before prom.
“That’s an example of the parent and child not being educated,” said Fiorillo, who gives health and parenting advice monthly on a Fox News panel.
The doctor said his early training in general surgery and helping the sick prepared him well for his career as a cosmetic surgeon.
“It’s kind of a weird thing to operate on a healthy person,” Fiorillo said. “The rewarding part for me is helping someone feel better about themselves. My goal is to keep doing what I’m doing and have faith.”
