Hillsdale Barber Gives New Career Old School Feel

HILLSDALE, N.J. — Eydie Gorme plays softly over the speakers in Tim Kane's Hillsdale Avenue barbershop.

Hillsdale barber Tim Kane works on Jordan Kapp of Paramus, a guidance counselor at Pascack Valley High School. He came to get his haircut on his lunch break and said he liked the old-school barbershop feel.

If you didn't know the place opened just over a decade ago, you'd think it's been around forever.

But talk to Kane for a few moments and you'll soon learn that's not the case.

"I was selling real estate, new construction, in 2005 and I was out on the street," Kane, of Pompton Lakes, said, careful not to take his eyes off of his client for too long.

"I knew I had to make a change."

It wasn't until he got his next haircut that Kane realized: "I can do this."

With his barber's blessing, Kane went on to get his barber's license and open a barbershop of his own.

What he likes most is having a community to call his own.

"You know everyone," he said. "Firefighter, police — everybody. You're part of the town."

Tim's Barbershop is located at 426 Hillsdale Ave.
