“We’re spreadin’ the sunshine,” said Lisa Mayfield of Tyrrells.

The staff loaded up shopping carts of brightly colored bouquets and took to the sidewalks, offering any man or woman they came across two free bouquets.

One was for them to keep, Mayfield explained. The other was for the lucky recipient to give away to brighten someone else’s day.

The campaign is the brainchild of the Society of American Florists.

Yes, it’s about promoting flowers and florists, said Sue Blake, also of Tyrrells.

But that’s not all it’s about.

“It’s a form of paying it forward,” Blake said. “It’s about making people feel good with flowers. We do it every day but we wanted people to experience what it feels like.”

Giving and receiving flowers is a way for people to touch each other, she added, no matter what the occasion.
